Cecilius Calvert wanted to make money and he wanted a safe place for Catholics to live

William Penn wanted to start a colony where Quakers could live safely
Virginia
separated from Massachusetts by the Btitish king because he thought the people in Massachusetts were too greeedy
charter
a written grant by a country's royal power (like a king) which gives someone the right to start a colony
Delaware
settled by Dutch traders who were taken over by British settlers, part of Pennsyvania for a time
North Carolina
Split from South Carolina in 1712 by "squatters" (people who lived on the land but did not own it) who gre crops (especially tobacco) and those looking for religious freedom.
South Carolina
settled by weallthy men who traded in sea port of Charlston (Charles town) used slaves to help grow cash crops (especially rice)
