- Layers of Earth?
- Mantle (Lithosphere and Asthenosphere) Outer Core, Inner Core
- Earth's _____ consists of large, moving _______ _______ which slide over the hotter, molten _________ beneath them
- Lithosphere, tectonic plates, asthenosphere
- The heat from Earth's center moves _____
- outward
- Heat energy moves from ____ to _____ places
- hotter to cooler
- Rocks with Earth's crust, slowly move below the surface reshaping _____ and ______ _______ over millions of years
- continents and ocean basins
- At plate_______, the edges are ______ or ______
- boundaries, ridges, trenches
- Rules of Plate Tectonics
- 1. Continental crust is less dense than oceanic crust so it doesn't sink. It is never destroyed and is permanent. 2. Oceanic crust is more dense, thus it can sink below. It is constantly being formed and destroyed and ocean ridges and trenches. 3. Continental crust can extend far below the sea, coastlines are not deep trenches 4. Plates never overlap 5. There can never be gaps between plates; if two plates move apart, new rock forms to fill the space. 6. The amount of new crust formed is the same as the amount being destroyed. 7. Plate movement is very slow.
- Plates can never overlap. They either
- a) collide and both push up to form mountains b) they slide past one another c) one sinks below the other and is reabsorbed into the mantle
- Convection currents?
- The plastic (changing) asthenosphere causes plate movements.
- When were prokaryotes formed?
- 3.8 bya
- What plate do we live on?
- North American Plate
- Seafloor Spreading?
- Mid0ocean ridges and rift valleys form in the oceanic crust as magma moves upward between two plates that are moving apart. The magma cools and forms new oceanic crust. lithosphere.
- Subduction
- As new lithosphere is created, older lithosphere is destroyed at boundaries where one plate slides beneath another. the denser plate drags its crust beneath the other to form ocean trenches, mountains, and volcanoes. Occurs at a subduction zone.
- Three results of subduction
- 1. Ocean Trenches 2. Mountain 3. Volcanoes
- Collision
- Two plates that collide form mountains.
- Transform Faults
- When pates move past one another, they crack the earth. Earthquakes and changes in the course of a river result.
