Secession
The act of withdrawing from an organization, union, or especially a political entity.
Confederate States of America
Formed as the government set up from 1861 to 1865 by eleven southern states of the United States of America that had declared their secession from the U.S.
Union Army
The army that fought for the Union during the American Civil War.
Anaconda Plan
The name widely applied to an outline strategy for subduing the seceding states in the American Civil War.
Ulysses S. Grant
(April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) An American general and the 18th President of the U.S. (1869–1877). He achieved international fame as the leading Union general in the American Civil War.
Robert E. Lee
(Jan. 19, 1807 – Oct. 12, 1870) A career U.S. Army officer, an engineer, and among the most celebrated generals in American history.
Emancipation Proclamation
Consists of two executive orders issued by Pres. Lincoln during the American Civil War. The first one, issued Sept. 22, 1862, declared the freedom of all slaves in any state of the Confederate States of America that did not return to Union control by Jan. 1, 1863. The second order, issued January 1, 1863, named the specific states where it applied.
Writ of Habeas Corpus
A legal action, through which a person can seek relief from the unlawful detention of him or herself, or of another person. It protects the individual from harming him or herself, or from being harmed by the judicial system.
Conscription
A general term for involuntary labor demanded by an established authority. (also known as "The Draft", the "Call-up" or "National service")
Clara Barton
(December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912) A pioneer American teacher, nurse, and humanitarian. Best remembered for organizing the American Red Cross.
Gettysburg
A city located in the state of Pennsylvania, USA.
Gettysburg Address
A speech by U.S. Pres. Lincoln and one of the most quoted speeches in United States history. It was delivered at the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, November 19, 1863, during the American Civil War.
Appomattox
An opera in English based on the American Civil War, composed by Philip Glass.
John Wilkes Booth
(May 10, 1838 – April 26, 1865) An American stage actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theater, in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865.
