Endurance
The body's ability or power to bear prolonged exertion, pain or hardship over a period of time. The body's ability to excercise with minimal fatigue
Resting Heart Rate
The number of heart beats in one minute (bpm) when a person is at comeplete rest or inactivity; A person's resting heart rate decreases as they become more fit
Anaerobic Excercise (without oxygen)
Physical activity done in short, fast bursts in which the body cannot supply oxygen as fast as muscles use it. Ex. Sprinting, Weightlifting, High Jumping, and diving
Yoga
An ancient system of breathing practices, physical exercises and postures, and meditation intended to integrate the body, mind, and spirit; originated in India; means "union"
Target Heart Rate
Describes the speed at which one's heart should beat during excercise to get the most benefit or fitness improvement
Kincsiology
Study of muscles and their movements
Core
The area around the trunk and pelvis. With good core stability, the muscles in the pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen work in harmony; Strong core muscles make it easier to do more physical activities while weak core muscles lead to poor posture, lower back pain, and muscle injuries.
Resistance Training
Training designed to increase the body's strength, power, and muscular endurance through resistance excercise; Weight training is the most common form
Hatha Yoga
Postures and breathing, the form most popular in the West
Heart Rate
A measurement of the work done by the heart, commonly expressed as the # of beats per minute (bpm)
Cardiovascular
Concerning the heart and blood vessels
Repititions/Reps
The number of times a lift or effort is made continuously, one after another without any rest.
Aerobic Excercise (with oxygen)
Steady, physical activity for which the body can supply adequate oxygen to the working muscels allowing performance to continue for long periods of time. Ex. Jogging, Cross-Country, skiing, line dancing, and cycling
Pilates
An excercise system focused on improving flexibility and strength for the toal body without building bulk muscles; developed in the 1920's by a physical trainer named Joseph H. Pilates; about 500 specific excercises
