antagonist
the opponent or villian of a story
characterization
includes all techniques writers use to create and develop characters (ex: when we made our Outsiders organizer and listed the Greasers-how they dressed, where they lived, etc.)
author's purpose
their reason for creating a particular work
cause and effect
two events that are related because one event brings about another. (Ex. Crashing into another car because I didn't stop at a stop sign)
static character
characters who change a little(ex: a nice character is still nice or nicer at the end of the story)
context clues
words surrounding an unknown word that gives hints to the unknown word's meaning (Ex: The feline meowed loudly. What type of animal meows? A cat- I used meow as a context clue.)
comparison/contrast
process of pointing out what two or more topics have in common or how they are different (ex: you have the same color eyes as Susy Q but she is taller)
bibliography
a list of writings with time and place of publication(such as the wirtings of a single author or the works referred to in preparing a document etc.)
alliteration
repitition of a sound or letter at the beginning of a word
climax
in the plot of the story or play, this is the point of maximum interest (ex: the exciting part of the story)
author's argument
author's beliefs or attitudes as expressed in his or her work
protagonist
central character in a story, play or novel
concluding sentences
restating your main idea or theme in different words (ex: How you would end your paragraph-saying the same thing but in different words)
dynamic character
characters who change significantly (ex: a mean character who changes into a nice character because of something that happens in the story)
Author's use of description
how the author gives details within his writing
contrast
the process of pointing out the difference of things
