Arraignment
pre-trial court appearance during which an accused person answers formal charges made against him or her with a plea of guilty or not guilty.
Compensation
payment to make up for a loss, injury, and the like.
Contract
agreement between two or more parties, written or oral, that can be enforced by law.
Defendant
person being sued or accused of a crime.
Delinquent
having failed to do what the law requires, according to a judicial ruling.
domestic-realations laws
laws regulating disagreements among family members.
equity
justice under the law that is influenced by fairness.
evidence
something that provides or tends to provide proof.
grand jury
group of citizens who decide if there is enough evidence of a crime to send the accused to trial.
indictment
formal accusation that leads to a trial
juvenile
individual who is under an age set by law (usually 18 years) at which he or she can be charged as an adult for a criminal act.
parole
release from prison or jail before the full term is up on condition of lawful behavior and with the requirement of regular reporting to an officer of the court.
plaintiff
person who files a legal action or claim
plea bargin
agreement in which a defendant pleads guilty to a lesser charge and the prosecutor, in return, drops more serious charges.
pleading
formal, written statement explaining the cause of action or the defense in a legal case.
probation
act of suspending the sentence of a criminal offender and giving him or her freedom under the supervision of an officer of the law.
rehabilitate
restore to a useful life, usually through treatment and education.
remedy
solution to the harm caused by the accused person. It is a legal order made by the court to make up for a wrong and may be money (compensation) or an order to do something (equity)
restitution
act of making up in some way for the harm caused by the accused person.
tort
damage, injury, or wrongful act caused to one person, other than breaking a contract, for which a civil lawsuit can be filed.
warrant
written authority to make an arrest or conduct a search.
