- planter- owned at least 20 slave, called the "cottonocracy"-made money from cotton. they built elegant homes, most became political leaders. Small farmers- most southern whites, owned the land they farmed and might have two slaves (worked along side each other) Poor Whites- bottom of the social ladder, did not own the land they farmed-rented. barely kept families from starving, lived in hilly wooded areas.
- Slave Codes
- southern states passed laws known as slave codes to keep slaves from either running away or rebelling. forbidden to gather in groups of three or more. couldn't leave their owners land without a written pass. Not allowed to own guns. Could not learn to read or write. Could not testify in court.

- people with fewer skills were being hired because they could be paid lower wages. more goods were being produced in factories-apprentices were no longer needed. factory system robbed them of their skills and independence.

- slavery spread and increased as well cruel cycle the more planters made the more land bought to plant cotton more then more slaved needed

- most were descendants of slaves freed durring/after the American Revolution- others bought freedom. Most lived in maryland and delaware- slavery was a decline. Not allowed to travel or vote.

- -slogan"americans must rule america" - called for laws to limit immigration. - wanted to keep immigrants from voting intil they lived in the US for 21 years at the time it was 5 years. -felt that immigrants stole jobs because they worked for lower pay - blammed immigrants for the crime in citties. -mistrusted them because they were a different religion

- union workers refused to do their job, durring this time strikes were illegal- faces fines or jail sentences.

- free african american who planned a revolt in 1822. betrayed before the revolt began. He and 35 people were executed.
- Nat Turner
- African American preacher who led a major revolt in 1851. led his followers through virginia killing more then 57 white settlers. Caught and Hung.
- working conditions
- factory day began at 4 am. breaks at 7:30 and noon day ended at 7:30 pm. few factories had windows or heating systems. machines has no safety devices, accidents were common. no laws regulating factory conditions, injured workers often lost jobs.
