- (Prindle) political ideology that favors the lower class government actively equalizes wealth and power. Hollywood even wealthiest members identify with the down trodden and is very livers, and they endorse policies that strike at their own pocketbook

- unauthorized use of copyrighted fulm, TV shows, & music. Chiina & Thailand are centers of piracy in the world. Piracy is the bigges problem in Hollywood because it drains billions of dollars from Hollywood that are needed to finance films

- ironic term referring to democrats going to hollywood to ask for money before the election. Hollywood suppor pushes the most left candidate. Important to show hollywood as a source of money in campaigns

- country controlled by china, 1949. in 1995 Richard Gere started LA friends of Tibet which educated writers, gave stroylines. China froze disney assets in country and movement failed. Propaganda failed, you need stars and executives on your side

Supports that many films despite their entertainment value dont have an audience b/c the public is conditioned to watching color films. Argument: owner would want them to be viewed by the public today.

- (Markoff) internet protocol TV. A move to use the network as a distribution medium, potentially replace 100- 500 channel cable with millions of hybrid combinations that blend video and text from the web. Cheaper, can record programs simultaneously

- person millions of ppl feel they know b/c of mass media, but have never met. They dont have influence on votes, but they draw publicity and interest to issues, good for raising money

- 2005 movie. Drama about ameicas war on terror raises political questions (sympathetic to teen suicide bombers, ambitious oil tycoons) Shows hollywood delving into politically charged movies in lieu of America's failing war on terror, iraq, and bush's approval raitings. Before these kinds of controversial political movies were left to documentaries or taboo.

Democracy government is based on ordinary men and women will participate in the political process, the same is in Hollywood. He and his colleagues are very actively politically, prove that democracy is alive and well in Hollywood

- a group of economic conservatives that lobbies congress for deregulation of the entertainment industry and abolishing the FCC. They agree with the 'Shareholder democracy" idea that more investment you make, the more control you should have with the airwaves

Responsible for allocating spectrum space (what frequency each station could broadcast on) Assumed spectrum space airwaves belonged to the people. 5 FCC commisioners appointed for 5yr terms, presidents party usually gets 3. *Means the government is exercising control over the content of broadcasts.

- (Prindle) TV-show main character is Archie Bunker. some viewers thought the show was endorsing Archie's ideas, clearly not the goal of the liberal writers adn producers. Impossible to determine how much of ideological message shows carry if the public cannot understand it.

- Very High Frequency and Ultra High Frequency. In 1964, FCC only allocated VHF for broadcasting to create an artificial scarcity of channels and an oligopoly for the networks. By waiting to allocate UHF, the networks ensured a greater audience. (60's FCC ran by broadcasters)

- (Stever) policy recommendation that to save our children from television you need to break up the huge vertically integrated corporations that control virtually all media. Even those succesful from huge media mergers admit that these corporations have bad impact from the structure

- started by Norman Lear in late 1980's to combat the religious right. Urged ppl to not let religion dictate their vote. Ex. of hollywood trying to affect what ppl believe through the use of propaganda

- National Association of Broadcasters. lobbies on behalf of the broadcasters. Anyone who owns a TV or radio station is a member. Congressman dont want them to be mad, NAB has a lot of lobbying money/influence

- Congress can raise or cut money out of the FCC budget. Majority party can therefore have a large influence over the FCC by using their power over the FCC budget

- process of changing b&w films into color. Artists believe this undermines the artistic vision. Producers like it as a money-making endeavor. Money battle b/w artists and producers

- 1995 ruling by federal court of appeals that upheld 1993 law requiring the FCC to forbid indecent TV from 6am-10pm. Constant debate on what is indecency
